How to Select Air-Leg Rock Drills

Air-leg rock drills combine a compressed-air percussion drill with a supporting air leg for sustained horizontal or inclined drilling. This collection helps mining, tunneling, quarrying and contracting teams narrow the choice between the YT24 family, YT27, YT28 and YT29A before requesting a configuration-matched quotation. Use it to compare verified model references and prepare the drilling, air-supply and tooling information needed for technical review. Final suitability still depends on the exact model or suffix, rock conditions, hole size and depth, drilling direction, air and water supply, drill steel, bit and complete supply scope.

Choose by job condition

  • Start with the exact identity. If the marking only says YT24, first confirm whether the drill is YT24C, TY24 or another supplier-specific configuration.
  • Define the hole. Send the target diameter, depth and drilling direction. Do not choose from the model name alone.
  • Check available air at the work area. State pressure and flow, the number of drills running together, hose inside diameter and hose length.
  • Match the support and tooling. Confirm the complete air-leg suffix, mounting interface, H22 drill-steel shank, bit connection, oiler and water-flushing arrangement.
  • Separate the drill body from the supply package. Air leg, lubricator, hose, couplings, drill steel, bits and spare parts are included only when listed in the written quotation.

YT24 family: identify the suffix first

Use the YT24-family inquiry page when the existing unit or request is labelled YT24. Send the nameplate and clear photos if you cannot confirm YT24C or TY24. No model-specific quotation should use “YT24” as the only identity.

YT27: documented FT160A and FY250 pairing

The YT27 product page records a 27 kg drill body, H22 × 108 mm shank and 0.4–0.63 MPa working-pressure reference. FT160A and FY250 are documented pairings. Confirm the target hole diameter because current model-level references do not publish one fully consistent range.

YT28: 34–42 mm reference configuration

The YT28 product page provides a 26 kg, H22 × 108 mm, 34–42 mm reference configuration and pressure-specific air-consumption figures. Use the final supplier data sheet to confirm the air leg, hose, oiler, water connection and operating setup.

YT29A: 34–45 mm reference configuration

The YT29A product page provides a 26.5–27 kg, H22 × 108 mm and 34–45 mm reference configuration. Its documented air-consumption references are higher than the current YT28 references at both 0.50 and 0.63 MPa, so compressor and hose capacity must be checked rather than assumed.

Match the complete drilling system

An air-leg rock drill is only one part of the operating system. Confirm each item below as a chain rather than buying by family name:

  1. Rock drill: exact model, suffix, supplier and controlled data-sheet revision.
  2. Air leg: complete FT160/FT170 suffix, collapsed and extended dimensions, feed stroke, mounting interface and approved drill pairing. Review the FT160/FT170 identification page.
  3. Drill steel and bit: confirm the H22 × 108 shank where applicable, drill-steel length, bit connection and target hole diameter. Shank size alone does not define the complete tooling combination.
  4. Air hose and couplings: size for required flow, hose length and acceptable pressure loss; verify dynamic pressure at the tool inlet during operation.
  5. Line oiler and water flushing: confirm the approved lubricator, oil requirement, water connection and site supply.
  6. Compressor: calculate from the selected drills running at the same time, then account for hose and fitting losses, leakage, altitude and operating margin.

Frequently asked questions

Which model should I choose?

Start with the exact model identity, target hole diameter and depth, drilling direction, air supply and required air leg. The four model names do not replace a configuration review.

Is the air leg included with the rock drill?

Not by assumption. The written quotation must state the drill body, exact air-leg suffix and every included accessory. A family name such as FT160 is not enough to confirm fit.

Can one compressor run several drills?

Only after checking the combined air demand of all drills that will run simultaneously and the pressure available at each tool inlet. Hose length, internal diameter, fittings, leakage and altitude can materially change the result.

Does H22 × 108 mean the drill steels and bits are interchangeable?

No. It identifies a shank reference, not the complete drill string. Confirm the exact drill model, steel length, taper or bit connection, bit diameter and supplier drawing before substitution.

Can I replace YT24, YT27, YT28 or YT29A with another model directly?

Do not substitute by similar model name. Compare the required hole, air demand, drill and air-leg interface, hose and oiler arrangement, tooling and the complete quoted configuration.
