1. T38 and T45: What the Names Actually Mean

T38 and T45 identify two different T-thread families used in top-hammer drilling. In commercial discussions, the thread name is only one part of the system. A functioning drill string also depends on the rock-drill-side shank adapter, rod type, coupling, bit thread, flushing path, rod handling and the intended drilling envelope.

The most important procurement rule is simple: every threaded interface that is expected to connect must belong to the correct thread family or use a purpose-designed transition component explicitly approved for that configuration. Do not assume that two T-series components will fit because they look similar or are used on the same class of drill rig.

2. Why T38 and T45 Application Ranges Overlap

Buyers sometimes expect a simple rule such as “T38 for smaller holes, T45 for larger holes.” That can be a useful directional intuition, but it is not a safe purchasing rule. OEM data shows substantial overlap because the usable drilling envelope is created by the whole system, including:

  • rock drill model and percussion output;
  • shank adapter and thread configuration;
  • rod construction, body profile and length;
  • coupling and bit connection;
  • bit diameter and bit design;
  • hole depth and required straightness;
  • rock strength, abrasiveness and fracture condition;
  • feed, rotation and flushing capability;
  • rod handling, guides and centralizers on the rig.

For example, Sandvik currently lists the RD921 rock drill with both T38 and T45 MF rod options for a 64–89 mm hole range. Sandvik’s HL710S documentation also lists multiple thread families, including T38 and T45, on the same rock-drill platform. The practical lesson is not that every machine can freely switch between the two. It is that the rock drill may support more than one configured drill-string family, and the installed configuration still has to be verified.

3. When Should a Buyer Stay with T38?

Staying with T38 is usually the lower-risk choice when the current fleet is already standardized on T38, the installed rock drill and shank adapter are configured for T38, and the present hole/application envelope is being met without an identified system constraint.

  • Installed compatibility is already proven. The shank adapter, rods, couplings, bits, rod guides and spares are already controlled as one system.
  • The target application fits the OEM-approved T38 envelope. A buyer does not gain value by changing thread family only because a larger designation sounds stronger.
  • Fleet standardization matters. Keeping one thread family can reduce mixed-stock errors, wrong couplings at the rig and emergency-spare complexity.
  • The problem is elsewhere. Poor penetration, thread wear, deviation or short bit life can also come from feed/rotation settings, flushing, worn components, rock changes or a mismatched bit.

4. When Is T45 Worth Evaluating?

T45 is worth evaluating when the intended rig configuration, hole/application plan and drill-string architecture point to the T45 family—not simply because a buyer wants a “heavier” thread. Current Epiroc positioning extends T45 into bench and production drilling and lists a broader upper hole-diameter range than T38. That makes T45 a reasonable candidate for some production-oriented systems, but the overlap remains large enough that system verification is still mandatory.

  • the rig or rock-drill documentation specifies or permits a T45 configuration for the intended job;
  • the current shank adapter and bit program are already T45;
  • a fleet standardization project is moving several rigs to an approved T45 system;
  • the planned application is outside the current T38 setup’s documented or demonstrated operating envelope;
  • an OEM or qualified tool supplier has identified a system-level reason to change after reviewing the rig, hole plan and operating data.

Do not assume a crossover component makes a complete conversion safe. A transition solves one interface only; it does not automatically validate the rock drill, rod handling, bit program, flushing or operating load.   1. Identify the rock drill exactly. Record rig make/model, rock-drill model and variant.
  2. Map the current drill string. Record shank adapter thread, rod thread, MM or MF rod type, coupling, bit thread and bit diameter.
  3. Define the real application. Provide hole diameter, depth, drilling direction, rock condition, production duty and straightness requirements.
  4. Check the OEM-approved configuration. Confirm the rock drill and rig support the proposed T38 or T45 string.
  5. Compare the complete supply package. Evaluate shanks, rods, couplings, bits and required spares—not just one rod price.
  6. Check rig-side handling and flushing. Verify guides/centralizers, rod handling and flushing path.

Are T38 and T45 drill rods interchangeable?
