A rock drill rod order can look correct on a quotation and still fail at assembly: the thread family may not match the existing shank adapter, a male–male rod may arrive where a male–female arrangement was required, or a nominal length may not fit the rig's feed and handling space. This guide is a purchase screen for a threaded top-hammer drill string. It helps you prepare the right questions before asking a supplier to confirm a specific configuration.
Start with the drilling system—not the rod label
First separate three different tool systems. This guide covers threaded top-hammer drill rods. An H22 tapered drill-steel requirement belongs on the H22 tapered drill rod path. A down-the-hole string belongs under DTH Tools. A label such as R32, T38 or T45 is not proof that those systems, or their components, are interchangeable.
Use this sequence to narrow a top-hammer rod requirement
- Replacement or new setup? For a replacement, start with the markings, photos and drawing of the entire mating string. For a new setup, start with the rig, drifter and exact shank-adapter reference.
- Lock the thread family. Confirm the existing or required thread at every mating point. Do not select a larger-looking thread number as an upgrade without a complete interface review.
- Lock the end architecture. State male–male, male–female or another controlled arrangement. Thread family alone does not define rod architecture.
- Plan length around the machine and work area. Check effective feed travel, make/break and retract space, guides or centralizers, handling method and planned number of added rods.
- Confirm the complete string. Review drifter/shank adapter, rod, coupling or bridge, bit connection, target hole and flushing together.
Extension rod or speed rod: confirm the connection logic
A male–male extension rod normally needs a matching same-family coupling when rods are joined. A male–female (MF) or speed-rod arrangement can connect differently, but the thread label still does not prove that a particular rod, coupling or existing string will fit. Choose rod length from the operating envelope
Hole depth is an input, but it is not a length specification on its own. Longer rods can reduce the number of joints only where the feed, mast, guide, handling and safe retract space support them. Shorter rods can suit restricted access but create more connection management. State whether your length is overall, effective or another drawing-controlled basis, then confirm it against the exact rig and drill-string arrangement.
Five checks before you ask for a quotation
- Rig, drifter and shank-adapter model or clear identification photos.
- Thread family and required end arrangement at both ends of the rod.
- Rod body/profile, flushing passage and length basis; provide a drawing or measured sample where possible.
- Coupling or bridge, bit interface and target hole requirement.
- Replacement/new-build purpose, rock condition, quantity, destination and any inspection or packing requirement.
Request a drill-string compatibility review. A useful technical quotation identifies what has been confirmed and what still needs evidence; it does not assume a complete compatible string from one thread label.

Can I choose a rod from thread and length only?
No. Confirm end architecture, rod body, mating shank adapter, coupling, bit and length basis. Send a drawing or clear photos for a replacement where possible.
Can an R32 coupling connect T38 or T45 rods?
No. The current R32–R32 coupling reference serves two R32 male ends. Unlike-thread connections require a separately confirmed crossover solution.
Which rod is best for a deeper hole?
There is no universal answer. The machine feed, handling space, alignment control, planned joints and complete drilling system set the workable length plan.
