What to Put in a Threaded Drill Rod Purchase Specification

T45 threaded button bit illustrating the matching end of a top-hammer string

“Threaded drill rod” is a category, not a complete purchase specification. A usable order must identify the thread system, rod form, both ends, body, length basis, flushing passage, mating shank/coupling/bit, quantity mix and required evidence.

Freeze the drill-string architecture

Start from the rig or drifter and work toward the rock. Record the shank adapter, coupling arrangement, installed rod form and drill bit. State whether the required item is a male-male extension rod, an MF/speed rod or another controlled arrangement.

Specification field What to state Why it cannot be omitted
Thread system Verified family at both mating points Similar-looking threads may not connect or load correctly
Rod form Extension, MF/speed or defined alternative Changes coupling count and string architecture
Body Section/diameter and required features Affects handling, clearance and system match
Length Value plus measurement datum Supplier and buyer may use different references
Flushing Bore/path requirement Must align through the complete string
Mating parts Shank adapter, coupling and bit references Confirms system-level compatibility
Quantity matrix Pieces per exact form and length Prevents a correct total with an unusable mix
Evidence Drawing/data, inspection and traceability Gives receiving a controlled acceptance source

Separate requirements from assumptions

If the buyer requires a specific material, process, hardness, straightness, marking or test record, state the governing document and acceptance method. Do not copy a number from an unrelated rod or supplier catalog into a new order.

For replacement rods, provide current markings and photographs, but do not treat worn parts as the only master. For a new supplier or changed configuration, define sample or first-article approval before bulk release.

Align quotation, order and receiving

Require the supplier to quote against the same specification revision and list every deviation. Itemize rods, couplings, gauges, samples, reports, packing and freight. At receiving, check identity, quantity matrix, markings, thread protection, length, visible condition, flushing features and required records before issue to site.

RFQ fields

Send rig/drifter model, current drill string, thread system, rod form, end arrangement, body, length and datum, flushing requirement, mating components, application, quantity matrix, sample/inspection/traceability needs, packing and destination. Browse Drill Rods and submit the specification through Request a Quote.

FAQ

Is the thread family enough to order a rod?

No. Rod form, body, length, flushing and mating components must also be controlled.

Can an MF rod replace a male-male extension rod?

Not by assumption. The drill-string architecture and all mating interfaces must be reviewed before changing rod form.
