The terms shank rod, shank adapter and extension rod are sometimes used loosely, but they do not always describe the same component. The fastest way to avoid a wrong quotation is to show where the part sits in the drill string, what interfaces it has and which machine drives it.
| Term | Typical position and function | What must be identified |
|---|---|---|
| Shank adapter | Connects the rock drill/drifter output to the first rod or coupling | Machine model, spline/drive interface, thread and flushing path |
| Extension rod | Extends the drill string between the shank side and bit side | Thread, end arrangement, body, length and bore |
| MF/speed rod | Extension component with male and female ends | Both end profiles, effective length and compatible string |
| Shank rod | Market term that may describe a rod with an integral shank or may be used ambiguously | Complete photos, machine interface and both ends |
Locate the component before naming it
If one end enters the rock drill or drifter and carries the drive interface, the part may be a shank adapter or an integral shank-style rod. If the component joins through threaded ends and extends the string, it is an extension rod. If the tool is a short handheld or tapered system, local terminology may differ again.
Do not approve a substitute from the name alone. Photograph the complete component, both ends and all markings. Provide the equipment model and a simple string order: machine → first component → coupling/rod sequence → bit.
Compare interfaces
A shank adapter must match the specific machine-side drive and flushing arrangement as well as the rod-side thread. An extension rod does not normally replace that machine interface. Conversely, the correct shank adapter does not determine the extension rod’s body, length or end architecture.
Build the RFQ
Send the equipment make/model, existing part reference, component position, overall and close-up photos, drive/spline details, threads at both ends, body profile, length, flushing passage, mating coupling/bit references and required quantity. For unknown or custom items, request a drawing-confirmation stage before production.

FAQ
Is a shank adapter a drill rod?
It is part of the drill string, but it performs the machine-to-string interface role and should not be specified as a generic extension rod.
Why does “shank rod” cause confusion?
Different markets use it for different components. Location, machine interface and end geometry provide stronger identification than the label.
