How to Inspect a Suspected Crack in a Drill Rod Thread

T38 drill rod thread inspection with a gauge in a workshop

A line on a drill rod thread may be a crack, a machining mark, a scratch, a grease track or transferred material. It should not be dismissed from a photograph, but it should not be diagnosed from appearance alone either. The safe response is to remove the rod from service, preserve its identity and have the indication assessed by an approved inspection method.

Do not grind, file, weld or blend the area before technical review. These actions can remove fracture evidence, change the geometry and make the part more difficult to evaluate.

Immediate actions

Action Purpose Avoid
Isolate the rod Prevent continued loading of an uncertain component Returning it to the rack as usable
Mark rod and string position Preserve operating context Marking directly across the indication
Photograph before cleaning Capture grease, rust and contact state Cropped images with no orientation
Clean by approved method Reveal the surface without changing it Aggressive grinding or blasting
Record matching components Check whether the joint contributed Discarding the coupling sleeve

Inspection workflow

1. Establish traceability

Record rod type, thread designation, length, diameter, batch or serial marking, supplier, receiving date and service history available. Identify the coupling sleeve, shank adapter or bit connected to the suspect end.

2. Map the indication

State whether the line is in the root, flank, crest, run-out, shoulder or body transition. Mark its clock position without covering it. Add a scale and take overview, mid-range and macro photographs.

3. Clean without erasing evidence

Use the cleaning method approved for the inspection process. Remove loose grease and dirt while preserving surface condition. Record any corrosion, metal pickup, hammer marks or prior repair around the indication.

4. Perform visual inspection

Use suitable lighting and magnification as required by the procedure. A continuous line, branching, opening or repeat indication increases concern, but visual appearance alone is not a universal acceptance test.

5. Select the approved NDT method

Where required, a competent inspector should select and perform the appropriate non-destructive test for the material, geometry and suspected flaw. Penetrant, magnetic-particle, ultrasonic or other methods are not interchangeable, and each needs a written procedure and acceptance basis.

6. Inspect the mating joint

Check the coupling sleeve and adjoining component for uneven contact, damage, galling, mismatch or contamination. A cracked thread can be the final result of bending, impact, poor contact or operating overload elsewhere in the system.

7. Review operating history

Record hole direction, rock condition, deviation, jamming, feed and percussion changes, flushing issues and unusual vibration. Note whether the rod was new, mixed with worn components or recently moved to another machine.

8. Decide using documented criteria

The owner, manufacturer or authorized technical authority must decide disposition against the applicable standard and component documentation. A suspected or confirmed crack should remain quarantined until that decision is recorded.

FAQ

Can I grind away the line and continue drilling?

No uncontrolled rework should be used to erase a suspected indication. Quarantine the rod and follow the approved assessment and disposition process.

Does dye penetrant prove the rod is safe?

No single test automatically proves fitness for service. The method, procedure, inspector competence and acceptance criteria must suit the exact component.

Should the coupling sleeve be kept?

Yes, when safe and practical. It can contain contact or mismatch evidence important to the root-cause review.
